Olympian Manika Batra: “More brands should sponsor TT players as the sport is fast & exciting”

Manika Batra is the most exciting young talent in not just the Indian Table Tennis fraternity but globally as well. Batra led the Indian women’s team to a gold medal win in the final against four-time gold medalists and defending champions Singapore at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. In an exclusive interview, Batra gave Playknox an insight into her life during lockdown, brands she is associated with and her future plans.

 

As an athlete, how difficult is this new normal going to be for you?

The coronavirus crisis has been difficult for everyone all over the world but we have to deal with it responsibly by following government protocols. I always try and stay positive and focus my energy on those aspects which are in my control. Also its an important for all of us to build our immunity.

 

Do you think enough focus is being given to mental health of athletes in India? How can it be further improved?

Definitely, today a lot of importance is being given to mental health, not just for athletes but for the world in general. I’m glad that people are speaking about it more openly now. The Sports Authority of India is also giving special attention to players mental health.

 

What has been your training routine during the lockdown? Do you plan to get back to full fledged training now that the lockdown has eased?

This lockdown has given me more time to work on my fitness and improve as an athlete. Yes, I will start working on my technical skills on the table as well and start doing more match related practice.

 

 

When not playing TT, what do you do? Any TV series you are currently binging on?

I like to read motivational books and I love to watch shows on netflix. I have recently been binge watching Vampire Diaries. Dancing has always been my biggest hobby and stress buster.

 

What kind of brands are you associated with? Why do you think more brands should sponsor TT athletes in India?

I am very grateful to brands who have sponsored me and seen the potential in me. I am associated with Asics,Edelweiss, Venkys, Herbal Life and Indian Oil Corporation. Yes, I definitely feel that more brands in the coming time will be associated with Indian Table Team players as it is a fast and exciting sport. The Ultimate Table Tennis league has also grown in popularity with domestic and foreign players participating and it is aired on prime sports channels like Star Sports too.

 

Which is your favourite social media platform and why?

I use very less of social media but I like to be on Instagram more.  It helps me keep in touch with all my Indian fans from all over the world.
