Stanford University’s Sports Equity Lab (SEL) has partnered with ethical AI platform Amoofy to unlock untold stories within sport and use them to drive systemic change. This groundbreaking collaboration aims to amplify underrepresented voices—athletes, coaches, and communities—by combining research, technology, and storytelling.
While sport has helped build bridges and uplift communities, it also mirrors the deep inequalities in society. One in three women globally experience gender-based violence (UN Women, 2023). One in five NCAA athletes report experiencing abusive coaching (SEL, 2025). And one in seven people worldwide live with a disability and often remain excluded from sport (WHO & World Bank).
SEL believes the wisdom to address these challenges already exists within sport—it simply needs to be heard. “The question is no longer whether sport can drive social change,” said Yetsa A. Tuakli-Wosornu MD, MPH, a world class athlete and Harvard-trained physician, now leading Sports Equity Lab. “It’s whether we’re creating the environment for it to happen.”
That’s where Amoofy comes in. Founded as a Public Benefit Corporation, Amoofy is an AI-powered storytelling platform designed to serve the public good. It prioritizes consent, privacy, and community ownership of narratives.
Amoofy CEO and Co-founder Luis Duarte explains, “Stories shape how we see the world, and in sport, they hold the key to building a more just and inclusive future. At Amoofy, we believe in the healing power of stories at both the individual and community level. Ethical technology ensures every athlete’s voice is heard, protected, and valued—not as data points, but as catalysts for systemic change.”
This collaboration will collect, preserve, and analyze first-hand experiences from within the sports community—focusing on those who have been excluded, marginalized, or silenced. SEL and Amoofy will identify recurring themes such as gender equity, faith-based violence, mental health, and access, and then translate those into actionable insights for sports federations, policy makers, training programs, and fans.
“A coach in a remote village might be using a method for resilience that could be adopted globally,” said Yetsa. “We just need to make sure those insights are not left in the shadows.”
The initiative aims to dismantle the culture of silence that has plagued sport for too long. From gender-based discrimination to a lack of representation in leadership, SEL and Amoofy are focused on creating accountability and shifting the paradigm.
Their work goes beyond storytelling—it’s a movement to ensure that sport not only mirrors society but leads it. “Sport has set standards in health, wellness, and cross-cultural collaboration. Now it must lead in justice, ethics, and human dignity,” said the SEL team.
By integrating ethical AI with community-driven stories, the partnership promises to reshape how we think about sport—and who gets to shape its future.
“Together,” Duarte adds, “we’re building a future where every athlete, every coach, every unheard voice in sport has a platform, not just to speak—but to spark global change.”
