FIFA appoints Carlos Cordeiro as senior advisor for global strategy and governance

FIFA has announced the appointment of Mr. Carlos Cordeiro as Senior Advisor to FIFA for Global Strategy and Governance.

Cordeiro is one of football’s preeminent business and organisational leaders. He will advise FIFA on new strategic initiatives to grow the game at all levels.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Carlos is the right person to advise us as we modernise our regulatory framework and grow the sport in ways that advance football for men, women and youth across the globe.”

Cordeiro designed and implemented restructuring reforms at the U.S. Soccer Federation as a board leader for more than a decade, starting in 2007 as an independent director and, from 2018 to 2020, as U.S. Soccer President. In 2018, Cordeiro played a leading role as co-chair of the successful 2026 bid for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will take place in Canada, Mexico and the United States. He was elected to the Concacaf Council in 2017 and served on the FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee until 2021.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity to help fuel President Infantino’s vision for the future of the global game,” Cordeiro said. “I’m eager to strengthen FIFA’s governance and build a game that offers more opportunities than ever for players, fans and partners at every level.” Cordeiro built a long career in business and global investment banking in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and across Asia, advising governments and some of the world’s largest international companies. Prior to joining U.S. Soccer, he was a vice chairman at Goldman Sachs and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
